Total Investment of Approx. USD 8.5 Million in Malaria and NTD R&D Projects With Partners Including MMV, GSK, Tanabe Pharma, Eisai and DNDi

The Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund has announced a new investment of approximately $8.5 million across five R&D projects targeting malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs)—in collaboration with global partners including Medicines for Malaria Venture, GSK, Eisai Co., Ltd. and Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi).

A significant portion of the funding (around $4.4 million) will support the preclinical development of a next-generation antimalarial therapy. With malaria still affecting over 280 million people annually, there is a growing need for innovative treatments that can overcome drug resistance and support prevention, treatment, and potential eradication strategies. This includes the development of long-acting solutions that could provide extended protection against relapse.

In parallel, GHIT is investing $2 million to advance clinical trials and regulatory pathways for eumycetoma, a severely under-addressed disease that causes chronic disability in vulnerable populations. The project aims to expand clinical evidence across multiple countries and support broader access to treatment options.

Additional funding will support early-stage discovery projects focused on novel antimalarial targets, reinforcing the importance of sustained innovation in global health.

With over $270 million invested since 2013 and a portfolio spanning discovery to clinical development, GHIT continues to play a key role in accelerating solutions for some of the world’s most pressing infectious diseases.
